Fraternizing with the Media
People forget how tough it is to run your own business these days. You can't just concentrate on the things that you do well, you also have to handle accounting, marketing, finances and the list goes on.
We find dealing with the media particularly tough. You need that sparkling personality and an easy way with people. Diplomacy and a general love of people help. These are all not necessarily qualities that we posses. We were very excited about an interview with Top Billing on SABC 3 after Joburg Fashion Week but we were clearly uncomfortable.
It is so important however. Even becoming the "magazine's darling" is something that we are yet to master. One has to woe the fashion editors and make a serious effort to ac·quaint/əˈkwāntyourself with them. The Abigail Betz team even spent a week of tea parties personally showing their collection off to private clients and magazines. http://www.abigailbetz.co.za/ Naturally they will get awesome exposure for their efforts. That totally amazing idea did not even cross our minds. One can really learn from the guys with experience.
The Wild Fig Collection Launch at Salvation in Rosebank was our first attempt at marketing and warming up to the actual consumer. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/profile.php?id=100000164308378 It was a lovely Saturday morning with champagne and OJ and a great way to meet the people that buy and wear Wild Fig. Also very interesting to see Melanie and Karabo in action. We both loved the experience and aim to expand the event by turning it into a seasonal affair.
